Pretty good week of practice!
Training Log
Resistance Train (Gym): 2
Conditioning (Road Bike): 0
I miss the bike :(
I’m out of shape.
But I’m back in the gym slowly returning to full strength so that’s a great sign that my injury recovery is moving forward.
We can’t expect immediate resolution but steps in the right direction is positive and I’m OK with that.
Skill Practice
This weeks practice I realized I’m definitely standing too close to the ball, and confirmed by my coach when I sent him a video.
So I’m getting “jammed” in my downswing as my hips turn I have nowhere for my upper body to rotate so in order to my square contact I come steep down onto the ball and pull it.
It’s good that I recognize this! So after that I started working on my posture and set-up which I had previously not been paying much attention to.
I think I started to move closer subconsciously from my SIJ injury and so it’s been a struggle to get my swing back to where I want it after, and still, dealing with that.
Golf Performance
Sigh.
This one was ugly. Too many penalty shots.
And a really poor performance off the tee box.
Honestly it was all mental. My swing felt great on the range and warm-up but when I got on the tee-box I was trying to “force” the ball to go where I want it and it was constricting my swing.
Similar to throwing a baseball if you try to force it to go to an exact location it’s never going to work.
I didn’t recognize it until the round was over but I was just playing too “tight” mentally.
A key here for me will be continuing to practice so that when I get out on the course I can really trust my swing to go where I want it to and free up my head so that I’m not trying to be so controlling on the course.
Golf is a beautiful game that way!
Wrap-Up
I still feel like I’m bouncing back from the time off from my trip, and getting injured certainly isn’t doing me any favors.
I feel a bit of pressure to start playing better so that I can try and get my HI under 15 before EOY, but that kind of mental pressure is only going to hold me back.
The goals for this week are going to be to put in a good week of training, a good week of practice, and really work on the mental side of performance where I’m comfortable with my swing and not trying to do too much.
It will be a challenge, but that’s what we’re here for!
